EASTBLOK MUSIC is a music company focussing exclusively on East European musicians and artists. In addition to releasing music, EASTBLOK MUSIC provides expertise in organising concerts, arranging performances by East European artists, and setting up contact with East European labels, artist management and media.
The record label’s founders, Alexander Kasparov and Armin Siebert, have years of experience working in both the West and East European music businesses. In 2006, EASTBLOK MUSIC was voted Top Label Award Winner at the music fair WOMEX. The company’s past releases include the now legendary compilations Balkan Beats vol. 1 and 2, „Cafe Sputnik – electronic exotica from Russia,“ as well as albums by Russian band Leningrad, Haydamaky from the Ukraine, and Hungary’s Little Cow.
Moscow-born Alexander Kasparov has worked in Warsaw, London, and Berlin, talks about choosing Berlin for the company’s location: “Berlin is the first point of reference for East Europeans in Western Europe. In Berlin, a unique, varied scene stemming from very diverse East European cultures has developed. Berlin is gradually becoming the central capital of Europe. It’s where East and West merge.”
EASTBLOK’s co-founder, Armin Siebert, has his own radio show ‚Nightflight’ on Radio Fritz, and is a regular on Berlin’s DJ circuit.
